How do I become a Freemason ?

You may wish to ask someone you believe to be a Freemason, or you may be approached by a friend who is a Freemason who will be able to give you some general background information concerning Freemasonry.

There are certain basic requirements needed for membership:

A belief in a Supreme Being
Freemasonry accepts men of all Faiths
You must be acting from your own choice and not being pressurised by anyone
You must be over Twenty One years of age
You are known to be of good character

Your will require a Proposer and Seconder to put you forward for membership. This will usually be done by your first contact.

Your lodge will probably be one in your home town where your friends and known aquaintances are members. A couple of members of your prospective lodge will require to come to your home to speak with you (and hopefully your wife) in order that any questions concerning membership may be fully answered. Inter alia:

That you do not have unreasonable expectations in terms of benefits of membership
That you understand the genuine principles of Freemasonry, and will support them
That you know what membership will cost, and what is expected from you by the way of charitable contributions
That you are in a position to make regular attendance at Lodge meetings
That you have discussed your prospective membership with your immediate family, and that they support your decision
That you and your wife may ask any questions that may be on your mind, and that you will receive full and frank answers

If you wish to proceed further, and the Lodge committee is happy with your application, there will be a ballot amongst the Lodge members which if it is in your favour, you will be informed of the time scale and arrangements for your initiation.

You can, of course withdraw your application at any time
